Blues Traveler @ Culture Room

26. April 2010

If you never had the chance to see Blues Traveler, too bad, but not too late. They are touring right now at mostly small clubs festivals. I had the chance to see them at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale Friday night. It was not only an amazing show, but crazy to see them in such a small club on a stage I have played on many times. I have seen my share of BT shows, but never this up close and personal. Let me say, they still got it and have developed this groove sound that you don't normally get from an area-type venue. After starting the show with a "warm-up" version of Sweet Talking Hippie, they launched directly into Love and Greed and it never slowed down from there. Whole band was tight as shit, and I gotta give props to the bass player, that guy had some big shoes to fill.  Only negative was the that the sound was muddy in front of the stage.  Small club guys, point the speakers at the crowd, not the back wall of the club :)

Opening band was Fusik. Caught the tail end of thier show, pretty cool and local too. Worth checking out.  Big thanks to Sue and Eric for the heads up on the show.

This guy is a master slide guitar player. Caught his last set at The Backroom last week and figured he deserves some props.  He hails from Canada and rips on guitar.  He has this old red guitar from '58 that has a great natural drive sound.  Check out these links for more info and samples:

Disclaimer: This recording is not for the young, the old, the weak, those with a heart condition or those who are easily offended. You must be at least 48" to enjoy this ride.

This band has be around for about 30 years. In that time, they have not matured in any way. Luckily, the members spent a weekend in Soultaco Studios to capture two gems of musical camaraderie. Proceed at your own risk:

G-Love & Giant Panda

6. April 2010

Well, I've been slackin on putting out reviews, but have seen some killer music in the past couple weeks.  Let me start here:

G. Love & Special Sauce with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad at the House of Blues in Orlando on March 27, 2010. For those who don't know, G-Love is an alternative, blues, hip hop band from Philly and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is sort of a roots reggae experimental live-dub band.

Show opened by the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, and were damn convincing for four white guys playing dub reggae.  The members are: James Searl - Bass, Vocals; Chris O’Brian - Drums, Vocals; Dylan Savage - Guitar, Vocals; and Aaron Lipp - Hammond B3 Organ, Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Percussion, Vocals.  No, it's not a mistake - they are partake in vocals and quite well I might add.  Tunes ranged from pure dub style reggae to heavy grooves bordering on a classic funk jam sound.  This is right up my alley, so I became an instant fan.  Even bought a CD and the guy selling them loaned me a buck (thanks man!).  Big up to the man behind the mix too adding the dub flavor ... If you haven't checked them out, I suggest you do so.

Next came G. Love & Special Sauce.  The guys are a solid group lead by G-Love's blues guitar style and hip-hop rooted lyrics.  The members are: G. Love - vox/guitar/harp; Timo Shanko - bass; Houseman - drums; and Mark Boyce - keys. I have to say that the bass player nearly stole the show in my opinion. Full upright bass that he played like a toy. Good job man. It was my first time seeing G-Love and his vocal styling is unique for sure. Damn good guitar player and harp too. He did an acoustic solo as an encore that was traditional and a very cool way to end the show. Great night over all, highly recommend checking out this tour if it rolls through your town.

Clapton is God

12. March 2010

I now know why they say Clapton is God. I saw his show at the Panther Stadium in Sunrise, FL last night and it left me unsure if I should go home and practice until my fingers bleed or just quit playing guitar altogether. I almost didn’t go to the show, but decided at the last minute to drive down to see if any tickets were still available. In fact, it was no where near sold out. So glad I went, too bad more people didn’t.

Clapton mostly played a standard Strat through a little vintage-looking tube amp and was pumping out legendary tones with such a fluid style that looked like his fingers were just floating along the fret board. He also did a few songs including “Layla” with an old Martin acoustic that sounded amazing. By the way, for anyone who only thinks guitar when you hear Clapton, you are missing the fact that he has great voice. Classic blues sound. I really think there’s an old fat delta blues player trapped inside that skinny Brit. Besides that, his band was amazing as well. Two girls singing back-up in perfect harmonies and an organ/keyboard player that would make you wet your pants. If this tour comes to your area, I highly suggest you check it out.

Oh yeh, Roger Daltrey from The Who opened up with his band. His brother played guitar and sang too. They did a few Who songs, which were good, but it was otherwise somewhat underwhelming. Better than his performance at the Superbowl though.  Just an opinion.

G.E.B. Now Available

7. March 2010

The original incarnation of the German Elitist Band was born of a secret society within the order of the Teutonic Knights, an elite military group, half warrior and half priest, formed in the early days of German Christianity. From within this order a group of Minneisingers was sent to chronicle The Third Crusade in 1189. The Siege of Acre is believed to be the oldest known existing piece of G.E.B. music and is thought to have been taken for its own protection during the Nuremberg bombings of World War II. It has never been recovered and remains the Holy Grail of German artists. In more recent times, Soultaco has captured this rare piece:
